February 2011 - Pro CNC hosts DFMA Bootcamp at Recaro Aircraft Seating
Pro CNC president Paul Van Metre, hosted a DFMA Bootcamp for engineers at Recaro Aircraft Seating GmbH in Schwäbisch Hall Germany. The DFMA Bootcamp was part of a 3 day event to study cost reduction methods for a new line of business class seats. The event was a huge success with hundreds of design changes incorporated into the new design to reduce cost. Estimated savings over the life of the program exceed $350,000 - not bad for 3 days work. Engineers learned about DFMA concepts ranging from an overview of the machining process, selecting the right size and form of raw materials for CNC machined parts, to modeling tips for parts that are easy to machine, how to least expensively dimension threaded holes, best practices when creating drawings and many other topics related to CNC machining and DFMA. During the workshop, engineers had an opportunity to look at real machined parts and discuss which features are cost drivers.
The idea for Pro CNC to offer DFMA Bootcamps was borne from requests from customers who have been subscribers of the Pro Tips newsletter and have gotten a lot out of the content but wanted a more immersive and hands on workshop for their engineering staff to really learn some of the principles of DFMA first hand. Pro CNC has put on several DFMA Bootcamps for companies across the world. The bootcamps typically last about 2-4 hours and are held in the middle of the day to include lunch. The information learned in the bootcamp can be applied immediately to new and existing designs and offers immediate and significant ROI for the design activity.
